understanding disabilities

Does Anyone Understand

The longer I’m around disabilities the more I realize that no one really understands disabilities.

You may think that professionals understand disabilities but just because they wear a white coat does not mean they are an expert on the subject.

When push comes to shove, the disabled person, or the caregiver, is the one who has the most understanding. No one has more understanding than these folks and I would bet my last dollar on it.

Looking For Help

When we’re looking for help we seek out the one person who is going to advise us of what to do, how to do it and when to do it. Doctors are usually the first place we start but as things go along we start to realize they don’t have all the information we need to win this battle.

As a general rule, Doctors and medical professionals have a good idea of what’s going on and what we should do. While a good bit of knowledge comes from medical studies, most of it comes from experience, just like yours will, over time.

That doesn’t mean we stay on their coat tails for life, we just need someone to advise us at the moment, give us a good swift kick in the seat of the pants and send us on our way with a reassurance we can do this.

Let’s roll up our sleeves, pull up our big boy or girl pants and get ready to meet this thing head on. Yes I know my wife’s disabilities may be pale in comparison to yours but when you get down to it a disability is a disability, if you can’t walk you can’t walk.

Disabilities is A Very Broad Subject

A disability is something that can be managed but to understand what caused it is quite different.

For example, I can understand how my wife became disabled but to understand the cause of it is an enigma.

My wife fell and suffered a bilateral femur fracture. More and more folks are falling and breaking legs and hips which, by the way is put a huge strain on Social Security. And why is there so much of it? And if we can understand what causes life’s disabilities, maybe we can proactively do something to curb them. In regard to my wife, how could she have maintained strong bones, so as reduce the chances that she would break them? What about dairy products don’t they strengthen bones?

The Answer is NO

Why you my ask? Highly acidic proteins in animal foods tear down the skeleton over decades. Vitamin D from sunshine, some exercise and an alkaline diet are the way to build strong bones. Dairy products do damage to our organs and the lactose intolerant are to be envied rather than pitied. McDougall Newsletter May 2003

Calcium and vitamin D are the two main build blocks for strong bones. The body does not produce calcium or vitamin D so we must get hem somewhere else, where do we get calcium if not from dairy products?

Calcium comes from the ground and if plants provide enough calcium for elephant skeletons, surely it will provide enough for strong dense bones for humans. We can get vitamin D from good old sunshine.

So, Are You Up For The Challenge?

What challenge? Don’t eat meat of any kind, no dairy, no eggs, no processed foods, and limited sugar and salt for two weeks. Eat what you like and as much as you like, really what’s left to eat?

Seventy to eighty percent of your plate should be a starch, potatoes, rice, legums, (whole grain foods) and the rest of the plate should be a vegetable. This basically is a vegan diet and has been recorded to lower or reverse chronic diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and arthritis to name a few. Read Dr John McDougall “Starch Solutions” or check out “Forks over Knives”. The success stories are amazing and they are told by people that experienced this themselves.

Here are some common disabilities/chronic disease you can avoid with proper diet and moderate exercise.

Arthritis or musculoskeletonal issues which can be difficult to work with.

Heart disease is estimated to be responsible for about 17% of the nation’s health care cost according to WebMD

Lung or respiratory issues such COPD. Lung conditions can affect people of all ages, making it difficult to breathe.

Mental health issues, including depression, can be just as disabling as physical health conditions.

Diabetes has been linked to obesity, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Diabetes is a common cause of disabilities in the U.S.

Strokes can range from mild to server to death so control your blood pressure.

Nervous systems effected by Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, ALS and Alzhelmer’s attacking the brain and nerves, in the old and the young.

Sensory disabilities are often overlooked but one out of six over 70 have vision, hearing or balance issues.

A lot of the vision issues can be corrected with a visit to an optometrist and the hearing can be improved with hearing aids, do no let vanity stand in the way of a more enjoyable life.

Most of the balance problems can be addressed with yoga or Tia Chi exercises.

In conclusion

Now that we have some understanding of disabilities we can see that a long and health life can be achieved through proper diet and some moderate exercise. We should shoulder the responsibility and do what we can to correct our course for a better outcome in our retirement years.

  1. Awesome post Chuck! I salute you for your dedication and love for your fallen espouse. God bless you for what you are doing. I have had two spinal surgeries, a quadruple bypass, a valve replacement and thank God for His grace and mercy I am still on the move somehow. But there were many times when I was crawling on the floor during recovery, alone in the house and that was tough. My wife stood by me all those times. I appreciated her all that much and I am sure that your wife appreciates everything that you do for her.

Praying for you and your wife Chuck.
